I wrote this book as a person in long-term recovey who spent weeks, months and years studying techniques that would help me to sustain my sobriety and to recreate a lifestyle that had real meaning to me. Although I spent a significant amount of time wokring traditional programs that kept me focused and on track I was seeking more - something that resonated with me - ideas and methods that would serve to catapult me from how I had been living to who I was determined to become. I needed to learn simple techniques to challenge and change my own mindset and negative thinking to start. I needed to learn coping skills that would help me to sustain a positive mindset even when my emotions were getting in the way. I had to become distinctly aware of the boundaries I needed to set in order to get a handle on my stress and anxiety. Avoiding uncomfortable or tempting situations that might trigger me was key, but being willing to experiment and introduce new healthier routiines that worked best for me was also a critical learning that proved to unlock my future and my success.
The importance of self-care is a commonly know concept within the circle of individuals who have received care for their addictive behaviors. The truth is that self-care works, however, it is of critical importance that your choices be made slowly and selectively so they have a real opportunity to transform into habits that are sustainable within the context of your life. Choose routines that have the potential to provide YOU with joy, more physical strength and increased mental fortitude. Your choices do not have to be extraordinary, they can be simple things that reflect who you are, what you enjoy and who you are seeking to become. I made firm choices only after experiementing with a variety of self-care routines. My journey led me to indulge in workshops that taught me new skills, new eating and fitness habits that nourished my body and mind, as well as a new career direction that aligned with my innate skills. Today, I am a professional recovery coach supporting others to choose the pathways and behavioral changes that work best for them, so they are empowered to build a joyful life and sustain long-term recover.
